What happens at Mass
There can be a lot to take in at your first Mass. Nobody is watching you and nobody expects you to know what to do.
- It lasts about an hour. Come a few minutes early if you can, and sit wherever you like. There are no reserved seats.
- People stand, sit and kneel at different points. Just follow whoever is near you, or stay seated the whole time.
- There are readings, a homily and prayers. You don’t need to bring anything. At the front entrance you will find a handout called “The Order of Mass”. It gives the step-by-step instructions for following along with the Mass.
- Holy Communion is received by Catholics who are prepared for it. If you are not Catholic or you’re not sure, you can come forward with your arms crossed over your chest, and the priest will give you a blessing. Or if you are not ready, feel free to stay in your seat.
- A collection is taken up. Visitors are not expected to give anything.
- Afterwards, people stay and talk. You can say hello to Father Alex at the entrance or stay for tea and coffee.
Bringing children
Children are welcome at every Mass — including the noisy ones. If you feel uncomfortable about interrupting others there are seats near the entrance where some families sit.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word runs for children from Prep to Year 6.
- 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month — 10:30am at St Timothy’s
